The over-institutionalization of people in the United States has a long history that dates back to the birth of the nation, and much of it is now seen as having been brutal and unnecessary. This country has institutionalized people for poverty, for mental illness, and for disabilities, among other things. The conditions were sometimes horrific and the isolation from community dealt a huge injury to us all. The U.S. still imprisons more people per capita than any other country in the world. But we also now know that deinstitutionalization without a strong investment in proper community supports has also had terrible effects. People with mental illness now make up a good part of the population in this nation’s prisons and jails and on the streets. So, what is the answer? The following “Voices from the Field” takes up this question.
